Alloy Phase Diagram Committee

The Alloy Phase Diagram Committee oversees and guides ASM’s involvement in alloy phase diagram data activities.  It is responsible for monitoring and giving input into the scope of ASM and International Programs, for monitoring the technical standards of ASM’s products from these programs, for liaison with other phase diagram committees, such as the Alloy Phase Diagram International Commission.

The Committee establishes policy related to the editorial content and scope of the Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion, recommends approaches that serve and expand the subscriber and author base, and maintains continual surveillance of the technical quality of these publications.  The symposium series Phase Stability, Diffusion Kinetics and Their Applications held at the annual MS&T conference is organized by Committee members and sponsored by the Committee.

The Committee proposed the creation of the J. Willard Gibbs Phase Equilibria Award to reflect ASM’s strong commitment in providing authoritative alloy phase diagram information.  The first Award was presented to Dr. Larry Kaufman in 2008 for his pioneering work in computer coupling of phase diagrams and thermochemistry (CALPHAD).

The interests of the Committee are not limited to alloy phase diagrams; its interests include many phase diagram related topics, such as crystallography of intermetallic phases, thermodynamics and kinetics, and bridging the entire range from fundamental experimental and theoretical research to engineering applications.  The expertise of the Committee members reflects these interests.  The current Committee chair is Dr. Ursula Kattner of the Metallurgy Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
