  • The 33rd Annual MSIT Meeting and 3rd MSIT Winter School

Ringberg 2019

What a fantastic week! So many participants that the Castle was overflowing with some delegates lodging in Hotels in the village at the bottom of the mountain. A total of 52 people attending the both meetings with the Winter School having 28 participants.
The format of the Winter School, which combined theory and practice of the evaluation of phase equilibria and thermodynamics, leading to the thermodynamic modelling of a real binary system has proved to be extremely popular. Starting with the basic theory of thermodynamics, phase diagrams and crystallography, students then learned how measurements were made and how these are then used, after critical evaluation, in thermodynamic modelling.
Although it was a very busy week for the students the feedback after the meeting was extremely encouraging. Already, the organisers are discussing how to improve on the successes of this year for 2020.

The Winter School lasted for three full days but most of the students stayed for the whole week to join in the evaluation work, which has been the staple of the MSIT for over 33 years. It's certainly good to see the next generation of team members hard at work, discussing, arguing, evaluating ternary systems. But all too soon, the week was over. 5 days just isn't enough.
But we have a provisional date for 2020 already, which will be released soon. It seems that in order to be sure of a place in the beautiful Schloss Ringberg, you will have to book early...
